Earliest meeting: Wednesday 9th September 1807
Final meeting: Thursday 19th September 1811
The Welsh village of Tremadog was formerly known as Tremadoc, and lies in Gwynedd in the north of the country. The village was the brainchild of William Maddocks in around 1800. He purchased the necessary land in 1798 and the settlement developed over the next 13 years, being completed in 1811. It was a busy period in the village’s history, yet it was forward thinking and held its own race meetings at the same time as the village was developing. The first 3 day meeting was held from Wednesday 9th to Friday 11th September 1807 when the opening Sweepstake over 2 miles was won by Mr F R Price’s Farce. Later in the meeting the concluding Snowden Welter Stakes went to racing fanatic Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s Beningsen. Such was the popularity of the races that meetings were held for each of the next 4 years. The 3 day meeting from Tuesday 7th to Thursday 9th August 1810 saw the Tremadoc 60 Guineas Purse fall to Sir W W Wynn’s chestnut horse, defeating his more fancied rival, Mr Teazle, owned by Sir T Mostyn. The final three day meeting took place from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th September 1811, offering a very full and varied programme. The opening day began with a 2 mile Match in which Mr W Maddock’s Hylas beat Sir W Wynn’s May-Flower, after which the Gentlemen’s Purse went to Mr Shawe’s Hambleton Jack. The first day concluded with the Traeth Mawr Maiden Stakes over 2 mile heats, when Mr Maddock’s Lady of the Lake required three heats before claiming the 10 Guineas Purse at the expense of Mr Bailey’s Negro Lass. On Wednesday the Snowden Welter Stakes went to Mr Maddock’s Brown Bess, the Tre-Madoc Cup and Steward’s Plate was won by Mr Shawe’s Hambleton Jack, and the 50 Guineas Match to Mr Lucas’s Leader. The final day of racing, Thursday 19th September, began with the Tanyralt Stakes which was won by Sir W Wynn’s May-Flower, the Vron Iw Stakes went to Mr Burgh’s Strideaway, and the concluding Handicap to Mr J Maddock’s Hylas.
